Yes, you can't give a bad reference. However, you can refuse to give a reference at all, which is basically no better, since it won't want to make the new employer hire you. Most times though, former employers just confirm the dates that you were employed there.

If it was only legal to give a good reference, what would be the point of references? It is their OWN experience with the employee that they are commenting on so usually there's no way to prove one way or another if it's true. Hope I could help.

Nope. References are references, and no one said they had to be good ones!! You just have to make sure that you do your job so well that your employer takes notice and will be more than eager to say what a fabulous employee you are!

It is only against the law to give false information. This is called slander. But if what they say is true then there is nothing form stopping them.
