The most outrageous one, the Penthouse Suite at Hotel Martinez in Cannes, France, has a nightly rate of $37,200. For that, you get four bedrooms, a private terrace with a Jacuzzi and sweeping views of the Mediterranean--plus the comfort of knowing you're getting the most expensive night's sleep money can buy.

The Burj al-Arab does not have ordinary rooms; rather it is divided into 202 duplex suites. The smallest suite occupies an area of 169 square metres (1,819 square feet), and the largest one covers 780 square metres (8,396 square feet). It is one of the most expensive hotels in the world to stay in. The cost of staying in a suite begins at $1,000 per night and increases to over $15,000 per night; the Royal Suite is the most expensive, at $28,000 per night. The total cost to build and furnish the hotel has never been released.

The Burj al-Arab features the tallest atrium lobby in the world (180 metres, or 590 feet). The atrium can accommodate the Dubai World Trade Center building, which, at 38 stories, was the tallest building in Dubai from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s.

According to Forbes, Bill Gates, has been to two of the world's most expensive hotels--Frégate Island Private in the Seychelles and Fiji's The Wakaya Club.

They officially name The Mansion at the MGM Grand as the most expensive hotel in the world. The high season double room rate was $5,000.

I guess it helps to be a billionaire (or at least a millionaire) to be able to afford a stay there. Personally, even if I had the money, I wouldn't want to go there.

The Burj al Arab in Dubai is the most expensive, although not the biggest if counting number of rooms. It does however have some of the biggest rooms per m2 in the world. You have to pay even to come in as a visitor and have a look!

Even the cheapest suite on our list is nothing to sniff at. It's located in the Burj Al Arab, an imposing hotel on the coast of Dubai, built to resemble a billowing sail. Parts of the hotel lobby are plated in 24-karat gold, and the building is tall enough to swallow the Eiffel Tower. As befits such a grand property, the Royal Suite features an enormous rotating bed, a private cinema and an indoor Jacuzzi. Guests arrive via private elevator. The cost per night? A very royal $10,900.

I think the Milton Keynes Travelodge is very expensive. £29 a night. I mean, why would anyone pay that much when you can sleep outside the pub on a bench for free?
