Ok, first, use Gain Laundry detergent, WITH BLEACH! Kills odors safe on colors. Secondly, Use dryer sheets, Put one in the dryer vent each time you do laundry as well, smell goes through the house. Place dryer sheets in air ducts so when the air flows through it picks up the scent. Then use air freshner and febreeze on fabrics. Be sure to use the same smell consistent or you will end up with a myriad of smells and they will clash and be yucky.

That mushy smell even after washing can happen if you leave your clothes lay damp in a heap or hamper before washing or if you leave your clothes sit in the washer too long before you actually dry them. I had forgotten a load in the washer for a couple days and when I found it WHOA!!! Will be the same if you leave a half dry load in the dryer. Rewash them adding some baking soda dissolved in warm water to the load. For white just add a little bleach to the water. I personally use Era liquid and Snuggle softener, (smell and price)but in Consumer Reports magazine they tested soaps and most all of them worked well on regular soil so buy the cheaper brands to save money.

Try tide with febreeze...and before you put your clothes on spray them with febreeze and let them dry...if they smell when you take them out of the washe you should try some baking soda added to your laundry...maybe a 1/2 cup.

They have a "clean breeze" scent...it smells great...Do NOT use the mountain fresh...EW

Use CHEER with bleach ( of course non-chlorine )
and when your roommates cook make sure you close the closet doors.
And once in while use FEBREZE allergen reducer
If you don't want to use cheer, use WOOLITE.
They may be expensive but not only do they keep clothes smelling nice, but they keep the colour in the clothes so it does not fade away
for cholrine-bleach use ALL

I use Gain just the regular no scents....it's not just clean, it's gain clean. With laundry detergent ...you go cheap..you get stink. Gain usually runs about $5.00 for 32 loads @ walmart.

Try Ariel Detergent.

Or wash clothes by hand with ZOTE Soap.
