It sunds like your gathering all the crocheted loops on to the hook, instead of crocheting and letting them fall down...
1 make a loop, put it on your hook.
2. with your other hand wrap the loose yarn counterclockwise around the hook...let it rest there.
3.with your thumb andindex finger slightly hold the base of these stitches for support...w/left hand.
4.gently pull hook thru- grabbing 1st yarn string- thru 2nd loop.
there you should have your first chain stitch...then you can repeat these steps for more chain stitches...as many as you wish.
I hope this helps you out. Wishing you the best.

I am certain your doing the afghan stitch which is alot of
fun. You have them on your hook and then a row they are
are off. You than go back to picking them up to be on the
row. Just look at the instructions again. If not, go to the
library and see if you can find an illistrated version to
assist you. Unless you have a person in your local craft store that can easily assist you in getting it started.
A friend or a neighbor may even help you. Have fun,
I know it always seems wierd at first but you'll get the
hang of it.

Sounds like you are not pulling the yarn through the loop on your hook, completing the stitch you were just working on. In crochet you always have at least one loop on the hook, until you finish off. Reread your instructions, step by step, and you'll probably see one part you skipped.

about.com is a really good resource, also.
Sounds like you're doing afghan stitch on accident and you want to do regular crochet stitch. Yarn over and go through both loops, not one.
