learning pronunciation is not just american english.. there are many types of accents for the language throughout the country... I believe that there is not a true correct way although some people have told me that the british or english have the true pronunciation. just say the words to ones understanding and that should be suficient.

it's a matter of getting used to it. english is my second language too and after speaking it for over twenty years - and having lived in an english speaking country for six so far - i still have difficulty understanding some accents. don't worry about it, there are accents that not even native speakers of another accent understand - a lot of english or american people have a hard time understanding scottish accents for instance. you can help yourself to get used to american accents by watching lots and lots of american tv , and speaking to americans. you'll find that over a couple of weeks it gradually becomes easier to understand people and eventually their accents will just sound normal to you.

Everyone needs to perfect the english language spoken as well as written. We over use slang words which make it difficult to understand. I am from the south and I just hate it when I watch the news and they have interviewed someone from the south that can't speak correct. It is imbarrassing to me. It is almost like the news speaker picks the most stupid person out.

Watch television. I have talked to many second-language English speakers, and they say they watched a lot of American television. It could help to just have it on while you're doing other things around the house so that you're constantly being surrounded by it.
When in a car, listen to the radio--AM radio has talk shows on most of the time, and that will help as well.
Also, make sure that you get out and talk to people. It is scary, I know--I am a second-language Spanish speaker, and I have to talk to my coworkers in Spanish quite often--but it does help.

If you're having trouble understanding american accents, maybe you should watch more american tv shows or rent some movies. Just watch a show (like a sitcom) once a day for half an hour and try and listen. I hope this helps.

if you write/read and understand english then 90% of the job is done.
Watching movies, television and news will help you a little more but not too much.you will need first hand experience of holding a conversation with americans to know everything they speak.
In that case maybe visiting the us or talking to americans who visit india should help you further.

A good way is to simply read/study the dictionary. There are some 'word a day' calendars which introduce a new word each day for you to learn and practice using.
