How do I open the mansion door in Pirates of the Caribbean for PS2?

How do I open the front door to get out of the mansion in the PS2 game "Pirates of The Caribbean"? I mean the game based on the Johnny Depp movies, not the Disney version. I figured out how to get all 4 ladders knocked down in time to escape, run down the stairs and make it all the way to the front door. But at that point, the clock is ticking and I can never open the door on time! I've tried so much, I am so frustrated.

When you get to the door, the blue 'x' symbol comes up on screen to let you know it's the control to push. But no matter what I try, it doesn't work. Am I supposed to push it in combo with another button? Or supposed to move one of the analog sticks at the same time? Please help, this is driving me mad.
