My toshiba laptop is networked to my desktop. The desktop has a HP printer and I go to printers on the desktop, select the HP, and click "share this printer." When I got back to my toshiba I click "add printer" but it can never find it. The desktop has XP and the Toshiba has XP Media Center. When I try to type in the name that I assigned to the printer it says I typed it in wrong or it lost its connection. Please help?

Pretty sure they are on the same workgroup. I went in and clicked change my home network setting on the desktop so I could make sure they correlated with the laptop. When I click the connection type it just says "other computers cannot connect through this computer" or some crap like that.

ok you need to know a few thing like the name given to your desktop computer. Right click on My Computer, and clikc on properties. If you have win Xp there will be a tab that says computer name. write that down. Now go to your laptop. when it asks for location of the printer type this YOURDESKTOPCOMPUTERNAME//PrinterName

You will also need your install cd for the printer so that you can install the printer drivers.

Both computers do not need to be on same workgroup if they are both on the same LAN. *cough* if you are using XP on your sharing pc. make sure u have alowed File and Printer sharing on the Xp firewall which is in your control pannel. If you have Zone alarm or any other software firewall on the Desktop you must add the Laptops IP into your safe list. or Trusted list if you are using Zonealram.

I share printers for pre-windows 2000 pcs on a large domain, DOS terminals are still capable of accessing a printer even on a different workgroup. So a workgroup problem is not here.....
