An Ipod is an mp3 player. (It's like saying a Xerox is a type of photocopy machine.) Some just play music; some can play video and show still pictures as well.

It depends on your budget (you can get cheap dinky ones for $40 at Target, or splurge for the fancy models at $400) and what your mom would like to use it for.
There are two major choices: hard drive or flash player? A hard drive player, like the video Ipod, can hold thousands of songs, video, and pictures, (about 10-80 GB of space) but is also more expensive. A flash player is smaller and cheaper and better for jogging or working out; it holds hundreds of songs (usually 512MB or up to 4GB) and may or may not be able to handle video.

Ipod is the most popular mp3 player on the market, but lately many other companies like Samsung, Sandisk, and Creative Labs have come up with models that are just as good if not better. Go to your local Best Buy or Circuit City and ask for their recommendations; then ask WHY they recommend a particular model over another.

Another important consideration: does your mom plan to download songs from the internet? Does she already have an account with Itunes, Rhapsody, Napster, etc? It's important to remember that songs purchased from Itunes can ONLY be played on an Ipod (or your computer). If you want to play them on anything else, you have to first burn the songs to a CD and then reload them onto your computer, so make sure you have the capabilities if you plan to do that.

Personally, I recommend the Sandisk e250 2GB. I just got it for my birthday and I'm very happy with it. It plays music, videos, and pictures. The guy at Best Buy said that "Samsung improved on the Ipod, and then Sandisk improved on the Samsung." I selected this model because I have a modest-sized music collection, and like to have music when I go jogging or have a long wait. And at $140, it was very reasonably priced.
