If you are after an honest answer, and not the racist guff contained in the previous answers, here goes: the proportion of asylum seekers in the United Kingdom is on average with those in the other major European Union countries (France, Germany, Spain, etc.). The figures for those seeking asylum dropped by 15% during the second quarter of 2006.
It is also blatantly untrue to say that they are given benefits such as driving tests, mobile phones, cars. etc. Asylum seekers do receive housing (would you have children living on the streets?), and a weekly payment that is less than the National Minimum Wage. They are also banned from obtaining paid employment.

The United Nations seems to have a law (though not mandatory) that if any person is fleeing persecution from his own country then the reciepient country should not turn that person away. However, since this isn't compulsory, many countries are now beginning to see that the influx of assylum seekers is getting out of control hence the introduction of new vetting laws.
Britain of late is one of those countries which is now screening would-be assylum seekers thoroughly.Britain used to owner the United Nations charter in accordance with its literal sense, but now these new laws will curb this influx. Many assylum seekers preferred Britain because of the influence of its colonial past and again the British appear to have sympathy to anyone being persecuted. It becomes obvious to any sane person that you can only flee to a country which accepts you in a hospitable manner.
So it is not by chance that Britain has so many. This shouldn't be percieved as being soft even if you look at how fast the British react to the needs of those befallen by natural disasters, you will notice that their sympathy surpasses any other country. The new controls will curb those who wanted to take advantage of the country's philathropy.

The goverment Invite them in and give them all priveledges like free homes, even free driving lessons. Many of them are seeking assylum because of criminal activities committed in their own countries, and then come here and commit these crimes over here.
Why does this government want to make Britain a third world country?
Where on earth are they all going to live? Seeing as we have a housing shortage for our own people,

Because of the way they are pampered as soon as they step foot into this country.....they get there feet under the table and then contact there mates and family, who head into this country....this circle of events is ever lasting and will only stop when Britain sinks under the weight of all the bodies living here.....It's only an Island for gods sake.....room will run out eventually.
And Timothy M should not believe every thing he reads in the governments web site.

1. welfare benefits always look attractive, money for nothing who would argue against that?
2. NHS i doubt any person would turn down free health care
3. Human Rights Activists seem to forget that about British citizens human rights, the ones on the streets, homeless are apparently not seen as important enough to fight for but people who claim to be assylem seekers (and often actually aren't it's just a basically guaranteed entry) are worth their time to fight for.
(all respect due to true assylem seekers)

The Government have failed all those tax payers who voted them in back in 97( I wasn't one of them).
Since that day while the Government have one eye on their citizens there other eye is looking after thousands of illegals.
In some parts of Britain now thats all you see. The Goverments lack of control on the situation and what was tantermount to a blind eye is the root cause of a very serious problem!

The reason for assylum seekers in all countries is because it is an easy way to get around immigration quotas. Britain is especially attractive because of their national health system and welfare programs.

Believe it or not, as a proportion of population we don't take greatly more asylum seekers than most other EU countries, while some, such as Austria or Sweden, take a much higher proportion. Total numbers are higher than such states because the UK is a bigger country and can absord more asylum seekers.
