Scratching tears the skin up and transfers bacteria to the wound, often causing infection.
A better success strategy would be Benendryl, Calamine Lotion, toothpaste (yea...good enzyme action) or best of all, enzyme & plant-based natural cleaning solutions. They break down the protiens in insect poison and often relieve the itch and subsequent reaction to the bite.
You'd be surprized how insidious a little Listeria, E-Coli or Staph under the fingernail can be in an open wound.

I have 4 right now from hunting yesterday. They itch like H##ll I can't help but scratch them. They aren't mosquito bites... Must be red bugs, or a spider. GRRRRRRR

Yes I do. I use witchhazel and rubbing alcohol for it. I've been told by my high school health teacher to mark a X on it where the bite is with your fingertips. It'll get smaller and disappear. It worked for me.
