I think it is frowned upon cause there is a higher rate of birth defects and mental retardation. Ultimately the society and tax payers are left with the financial burden of paying for the medical expenses. It's called inbreeding.
Myself....I could care less what you do as long as you know and can accept the consequences.

If you live in england, it is legal to marry your cousin. I know some states in the Usa do not allow it.
If everyone involved is cool about who you marry, then go ahead and don't give a monkey's nuts about what the general public think - anyway how would they know that your wife is your cousin?

The public/law does not accept marriage between closely related people because there is a heightened likelihood of genetic disorders... Disorders such as hemophilia, mental instability, mental retardation, and physical deformity...
When a male and female mate and produce offspring there are dominant and recessive genes.. It can be visualized on a Punnet Square...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punnett_square
Because genetic diseases are passed on recessive genes 2 parents who both carry a recessive gene for a disease will pass the disease onto their child 1 in 4 times and the recessive gene 3/4 times...
Inbreeding causes a heightened infant mortality rate..
Marrying/ having sex with a too closely related relative is incest..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incest
It is in society's best interest to oppose inbreeding because of the cost of medical treatment for disease more prominent in inbred off spring.. It can also be argues that it is in the publics best interest for safety as inbred offspring show a heightened rate of mental disorders related to violent outbursts...

Some might object because of family connections etc. My boyfriend had a mate at work who married his cousin and nobody had a problem with that, so if people seem to have a problem then the problem is with them.Ignore what they say and do what you think is best :o)

If you want to marry your cousin, you need to consider a few things first. Are you going to have kids? I knew someone who married their 2nd cousin (without knowledge), and they had a son, and their son had a bad heart. He died at the age of 4. Genetically the possibility of you having a child that is born ok, is rare. So it is something to think about.

My 2 cousins married (their mothers were sisters )and they have a good, happy marriage. they had 3 beautiful , healthy children. they are a lot older than me so I didn't find it strange as I had known them only as a couple. but some people thought it was weird and found it hard to imagine how they could be attracted to one an other.

well let them say what they like because you can always remind them that if they went back far enough (actually not that far in most cases) in their family tree they would probably find that they had great grandparents or great, great grandparents may be first or second cousins. people never moved around like they do now and the population was so much smaller. be happy so long as it is not illegal in today's law who cares?

Congratulations, wish you many happy years together. Seriously, you can't help who you fall for.
Just some things to think about-most people will never know who their true father was. (could be you are not even related)
look at the 'blue bloods' they always interbreed, arrange marriage so money stays in family etc.

You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family. It's a sod that the one you love happens to be your cousin. But so what!! You love her, she loves you, why even give a rats *** about anyone elses opinion? You have the rest of your life to lead. You should do it how YOU want, not how anyone else wants!!
