Yes, in the original movie a crew member or an actor hung himself from a tree in the scene where the witch of the west is trying to set the scarecrow on fire.

Nope! It's not true.
If you look at the scene closely, you'll see wild birds walking around (Peacocks, etc). The thing you see is a bird.
I love the movie, and have read lots of books about it.
But.... it does look real, no?

Nope. Hoax. Something on the set fell down and you know how people are.. they like to turn everything into something it's not. Just a set malfunction.
