does anybody know why the decimal 0.89999999999999.......... ends up with the fraction 0.9 after i solve it? that's not the real answer, but apparently that's what i always end up with. please can anyone explain this?! and no this isn't for one of my homework questions.

Certain equations don't quite work out with infinite decimals like that. I can't quite figure out what the problem is in this case, since I'm not sure what exactly you're trying to solve. However, I encountered a similar situation (see below) a few years back, and still haven't gotten a satisfactory answer yet.


x = 0.9999999999999999....
10x = 9.9999999999999999....
-x -0.9999999999999999...
9x = 9
x = 1
WTF?

How is your calculator set, some calculators round up after the 3rd or 4 th place after the decimal which would make it .09

because the calculator rounds up the last 9 if the series is to big for the calculator, and toggles all the other 9's to 10's which shifts the 8 to a 9.
