The best way to get started is to learn the hotel business from the ground up. Work in housekeeping and or maintenance for example, which will give you some ideas. Work the lobby and the front desk, which you will give you some customer service experience. By doing these things, it should give you an idea of what hotel guests are expecting for their money, and it should also prepare you to make improvements in your hotel business in the future. Taking related courses at your nearest school/tech school will greatly benefit you also. Management skills should benefit you tremendously.

Just one of those things where you have to start from the bottom. My advice would be to start in a full service hotel though, this will give you the ability to train in many departments, and thus make you more valuable to other hotel's if you ever decide to leave the hotel you started at. It does not hurt to kiss some butt once you get the starting position either, in most chains the G.M. is going to be the key to achieve your goal of moving up the corporate ladder

There are several colleges that have hospitality and hotel management classes that can help you get started, if you are looking to get a degree first. Purdue University is one such school, and there are probably others online.
