I asked my husband who is not only a carpenter but a painter, I was a painter also. Use the foam in a can, call around to Lowe's or Home Depot, the foam in a can is called, "Great Stuff", also use caulk wherever it requires it.

I use the plastic sheeting sold at Wal-Mart or Home Depot, or any home improvement store. The sheeting that is sold for the purpose of winterizing windows. I seal the sheeting over the windows of my home with the adhesive that comes with the sheeting. Works great! And inexpensively!

As for doors, if air is coming in from the bottom, and you have an adjusting threshhold, you can raise the threshhold by loosening the screws that are in it. Or you can roll up a towel or two and place it at the base of the door. Along the sides and top of doors, if air is coming in, you may have to add some door insulating from the hardware store, the kind that sticks on.

Silicon around the window frames does help. I would also cover my windows with plastic. You can buy rolls of plastic inexpensively. Adding window stripping around the doors is another sure fire way to keep the cold air out. Also, you should insulate your electrical outlets and light switches. Alot of cold air comes in around these. You can buy special gaskets from a home improvement store in your area.
