first thing to do is excavate whats there and depending what your putting on the drive things like tarmac concrete blockpaving or just gravel
dig out about 6 to 8 inch deep put a layer of stone about 3 to 6 inch and compact with a whacker you can hire these then when you know what you putting on the drive ask me again
cheapest thing is gravel but stone under it first and put a groundcover down first to stop weeds ect then compact and lay a thin layer of gravel dont use a small gravel as it will move about to much if blockpaving thats easy to do but costs a lot concrete after a few years will crack and look a mess same with tarmac
it all depends what you wih to spend
if you wish further ideas just ask also i can tell you what it wil cost fro all the things you wish to do

Well stone makes the drive way look nice , but there a lot of work to keep clean. You need to dig up drive way , place plastic ground cover , then use river sand so nothing will grow. And then the stone.and so on....Concrete is easy u need just to dig up the correct depth and lay the concrete , if large cars drive over then use steel reinforcement and leave pressure gap for the expansion of the concrete or premature cracking occurs. So go with u r gut ,its your house u have to live with it , not me. hehehehe

Depends on the quality of the soil where you live. If the ground is hard enough, you could have a plain dirt DW. If not, gravel would be cheapest, but concrete would be best for your vehicle and resale value.

Check with your local council. The reason I say this is because most councils will only consider allowing you to drop your kerb if you have the whole area that's to make up the drive as hard standing - i.e no gravel/stones/grass etc.

I am going to assume that you have soil where the intended driveway will be going.as you have not given us any indication as to what it will be going on to ...
Must be dug out at least a foot (30cms)
Quarry stones laid over the soil to a depth of 4" (10cms) then finer stones of half inch (12mm) to a depth of 4" and finally concrete.
I prefer coloured stones for the final 4'.

private tenant or owners can do what they like. council/h/a have to go by what they say. we had to put it on a hard standing but could use gravel in between. so we concreted in slabs, and put gravel up in between.

If your charter (If applicable) and city ordinances both permit gravel, you can use it.
Most excavation companies in your area will help with telling you the best thickness of gravel for your area and soil type.
