You need to tell your todler that he shouldn't take the baby's toys. You'll probably have to tell him that a lot. My Mom told me that on my first birthday she got me a cake and just let me dive into it and get all messy.

What I did was have a big birthday party for my son for his first birthday. Your 3 year old will be there of course, but he'll also know it's your other son's special day. Then all your friends and family can bring presents and your one year old will have a blast. If that's not an option, I think the following are really awesome one year old gifts, that your 3 year old will hate:
-Fake cell phones
-Real remote controls (the cheapy kind that are universal
-a very tiny little chair and desk (for some reason my son LOVES little baby chairs that are just his size. Kind of funny, but they like that.
-A cheap-y non cordless phone for him to pay with.
-Special bath toys that only he gets to play with in his OWN bath. He'll have fun; even though you'll have to give two baths.

The funniest thing I ever read about gifts for young children was that there was a small study which found that the most interesting gift was a plain old cardboard box. LOL It's true - they like to climb in it, bang on it, throw things in it, etc. Good luck in your quest. Maybe the big Lego blocks called Lego duplo? Or just let the baby play with the boxes his other presents come in. :)

Whenever you get a kid (no matter what age they are) a gift always ask yourself "How many times are they gonna play/use it?" Most of the time the kids rip it open, put it together, play with it for 20 minutes, and then throw it in the toybox. For an infant, get him something he can grow into. Get him a toy that's a little mature for his age so he can play with it now and play with it in 6 months and still be entertained by it.

LOL well your 3 year son will be interested in whatever he gets because its a new toy! I find this problem with my daughter becausse she kind gets left out and I try to get her things that are specifically for her. I think a good 1st b-day present is a little bike his size that he pushes with his feet. Maybe some type of educational toy. Also they love those couches and chairs they sit on that are just their size. Good Luck and tell him happy b-day!!! My daughter will be 2 soon herself.

A college fund. A college education is the best gift you can give your son. If you start saving $20 a week for him now, at the current interest rate, he will have $42444 when he is ready to go to college.
Seriously, a good future is the best gift you can give your son.

3 year olds don't share well. Fortunately, younger siblings don't mind the fight much, and as they age, they instigate them anyway.
I recommend going to Lowe's and getting an empty appliance box (like washing machine, refrig, etc.) and painting it. Make a little house out of it, and let it be your 1 year old's special refuge where the 3 year old is not allowed to enter. Do it for the 3 year old, also.

You could take him somewhere rather than give him something. A day alone with you would be a better gift in his eyes than any toy. Plus, at one, he has NO idea he is playing with hand me downs. He probably won't have any idea for years. Take him to a children's museum, a park, or some where great for kids in your area. Have fun!

Print out a picture of the two of you from your home computer and put it in an envelope. Put the envelope in another envelope. Put that envelope in a box and wrap it. Put that in a box and wrap it. And so on. Most of the fun at the first birthday is ripping open the packaging anyway so let him have his way.
My mother gave me a huge elaborate red wagon for my first birthday and I spent the whole day playing in the box.

I would suggest a savings bond. And ask the child's grandparents and other family members to do the same.
When the child is ready for college, or moving out on his own, the savings bonds will be much more helpful than a forgotten toy.

What was suggested to me, was to wait until after his birthday to see what he still needs. Which was a great idea, I thought. I did buy him a little something so I didnt feel like I was being cheap, but I waited until after friends & Family gave him his gifts, and figured out what we still were in need of. Remember that he wont remember this birthday and you can get away with it!
Hope this helps you!?!
