I have a new computer. It has Windows XP. I bought a data cable for my phone but when I plug it in Windows wont pick it up. What can I do? I know the cable works because it charges the phone. Any advice?

What kind of phone is it? Some phones can be connected in two modes: Modem or File System. If your phone is in File System mode, the new hardware wizard may well not run as no new drivers are needed. If you need to access the phone in Modem mode you'll have to switch the mode at your phone. See the phone's docs for instructions on how to do that.

Most of the time, computers wont detect cables when they are plugged in, because they're not considered hardware to the computer. You might need software for your phone which will detect your phone, because windows doesn't detect phones themselves.

You may need to manually start the Add New Hardware wizard in Control Panel/. Your computer may just be confused by the new technology. see if what you are trying to install comes with a disc, and this will solve your problems

start>control panel>add hardware

be sure u have the driver for it (if a disk came with it, it will probably be ther-if not, it is probably plug and play)

hope this helps....good luck!

ps. there is a possibility that device is not on the HCL (hardware compatibility list) check with your computer manufacturer or www.microsoft.com
