When an engine's power is stated in "horsepower" (hp) the torque is usually stated in "pound-feet" (lb-ft). The corresponding SI ratings are stated as "kilowatts" (kW) for power and "newton-meters" (N-m) for torque. These ratings are usually the engine's peak power and torque which occurs at a certain rpm (revolutions per minute). An example is "250N-m @ 4700rpm."

in laymen terms ... simply - the hp is how powerful the engine is, the more horses it has the more powerful the car. it's like having 281 horses running the car in your case. the torque is the pulling/pushing power of the car (depending on front or rear wheel drive). this determines how fast your car can move from one point to another.
