Best suggestion, if you still have the CDs that came with it, format and reinstall. You can try scanning and such, but one thign people don't understand is that when viruses infect, and then are removed they can still cause damage when they get removed. Backup EVERYTHING first. If there is nothing on your system, reinstall the operating system. If your reluctant to try that, go to the webpage below and use the free online virus scan. it may help. I trust this virus scanner over any other I've worked with.

Start with the basic maintainence on your system before downloading third party software.
this simple guide will assit you
http://www.pctechguide.com/tutorials/hdd...
Make sure your windows updates are uptodate, and also your
anti-virus is updated and run a full scan of your system.
Tune up your start up files (faster loading system)
Go to Start>Run and in the Run dialog box type in 'msconfig' and hit Enter.
System Configuration Utility will pop up choose the Startup tab.
Click on that tab and you will see the list of what runs at startup.
Use this site to determine whats safe to uncheck
type in search box exactly how it appears in msconfig start up
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php.....
and keep it on your favorites for future ref as when you install new software and downloads check msconfig again to make sure no more items have been added to start up.
I used to run my PC with 5 things on start up that included firewall and antivirus...
Good luck, its time consuming, but gets easier if you run things regularly.

You have something in your registry that runs on startup that the spyware checkers isn't finding. First, delete all the cookies, temporary internet files, and temp files. Then download Reg Vac. It's a free (30 days) registry cleaner. If that doesn't work call Geek Squad.

Click on the Temporary Internet File folder, delete ALL files in that folder
delete all icons with a day name.
Use the SEARCH to find all *.TMP files
Delete all of them that your system will allow
go to c:\windows\TEMP Delete ALL files in that folder that the system will allow.
On your desk top empty your Recycle Bin

When was the last time it was working? Try using system restore to restore the system to teh settings on that date. Sounds like you have 'something' running, spyware/malware/virus etc. You can try http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ by Trend Micro, they have free scanning tools on thier site.

Defrag your HDD.
Double click "My Computer", Right click the C drive, click "properties". choose "tools" tab, defrag.
This will arrange your files in sequence for fast access.
Hope this helps.

It seems like you need to re-format your (operating system) windows. if it didn't solve the problem, i believe its the hardware problem. mostly likely, the hard-drive is dying.
