I know travelling knife saleman use them to hang suits or blazers on but what possible use could normal people have for them? I have enough core stability that I can hold myself upright whilst cornering and I'm sure you would have to be near death to need additional support.

Aren't you the lucky one, many people need help to get in and out of cars, me for one. They are not for hanging clothes on they are for pulling yourself up, or to help when lowering yourself into the seat.

The proper name for them is "grab handles" - which isn't really a useful description, because a handle you didn't grab probably wouldn't be a handle.

They are to help the elderly, infirm or mildly disabled get into and out of the car. If you watch old people getting out of a car you'll notice they often pull themselves up to standing from sitting with one hand holding the grab handle, and the other on the door.

It's a panic handle for sharp cornering, or to help you if your vehicle rolls over or maybe if you have more passengers than you have seat belts. And yes they are good for hanging things off of.

The correct technical name for these are Jesus handles.
Every time you look like you might be almost crashing everbody grabs it & shouts JESUS.
This is not a joke.
Mechanics in Northern Ireland Use this as technical term as a normal day to day phrase. Honestly....

I have always wondered that myself! I mean, especially the ones on the driver's side!! Shouldn't the driver be holding onto the steering wheel???

We call them "scream bars." I guess they're what you grab if the driver slams on the brakes or does anything that scares the daylights out of you!

My short wife loves those. She grabs them when crawling in and out of my Toyota Tundra. That's what they're for!
