It could possibly be a loose, or damaged oil filter cartridge, or a loose drain plug. It can also be the Oil Pressure Switch (sending unit). That is located on the rear of the engine block close to the transaxle.

It is most likely a bad rear main seal. That is not a real cheap repair.

Have a mechanic look at it quick. Don't rely on the oil light to tell you that you need oil!

OK, so a little lecture maybe. I'm entitled. I have TWO daughters driving Neons!

I had a friend with this problem. The rear main seal is a hard seal to get at and requires a lot of labor, you have to remove the transmission or the engine to get at it. and as for the mechanic he was correct you should not have any more oil pan leaks. The dodge neon had a engine with very small seals that do tend to leak. My friends neon had a Major failure and lost the rear main seal completely. You can try switching to a thicker oil but this is just a temporary fix until you can fix the seal. Try a 10W40 and if the leak gets very bad you can go to a 15W40 (can find a most truck stops under the name rotilla) but don't use this oil in the winter it is very thick and will put extra stress on the oil pump and oil system. Good luck

If there was oil on top of the engine, your leak more than likely

originates at the top. Start with a cold engine, oil at normal level

open your hood, start the car and begin scanning from the

valve cover gasket downward. You may need to clean engine

first. An oil leak the size that you described. should be relatively

easy to find:

Safety Note: Be sure to avoid Fan Belts and Other Moving Parts !!!

P.S. If oil from valve cover gasket: try tightening bolts; be gentle.
if Gasket needs replacing, they are relatively cheap and not
hard to replace.

This is a tough one without seeing the engine. There are so many places for oil to leak from. But one thing seems odd and thats the amount of oil leaking. It allmost sounds like your crankcase ventilation (PCV valve) could be blocked causing the excess preassure in the crankcase to blow an oil seal. It would be easier if I saw a picture of the engine. One thing you can try though is to take off the oil filler cap; run the engine, and see where the iol is comming fr. If theres no leak; put the filler cap back on and see if the leak manifests itself. Good luck

I am doubting a head gasket. It sounds more like a gasket that seals an area where there is lots of oil. Oil pan, timing cover, rear main seal, or valve cover gasket. It might be a mess, but may not be too expensive to fix. I know you don't want to hear it, but get aquainted with checking all your fluids. Without them the engine will be ruined and you don't want your dad to think you are a moron.
