Some directors have a particular style. Quentin Tarrantino movies are all identifiably Quentin Tarrantino movies. Every Kevin Smith movie ever is the same.
Filmmaking is collaborative, but a strong director will leave the mark of his or her genius on the final film. . . Ingmar Bergman, Michelangelo Antonioni, Alain Resnais -- a word that would be useful to you is "auteur."

i thought this too - like winnig awards and stuff - how do you choose?
then came Harry Potter...
i read the books - i had read 3 i think when the first movie came out so i knew the story, and it was told beautifully - that woman has talent no matter what anyone says
and when i saw the films it just hit me - this is BAD directing!!!! like the way you see the action when you read it, is not at all the same as in the movie - whoever did it just did not stay true to the story, its a great story it was just told badly - and thats the directors fault!!!
after you have insight like that, when it comes to other movies you just see, the way the plot flows - or doesnt - the shots - the fluidity - just the overall feel you get - i dont know i mite be talking crap - but thats how i see it
i also like music video directors - its easier to choose them cos they usually the ones that come up with the concept of the video - and if you say "wow, thats a really cool video" for whatever reason, its thanks to the director!!

Which directors.
Maybe you like their style, or the way they handle suspense, or their vision of a particular story.
Tim Burton is a good director but does a lot of what I call dark movies. Darkness is a staple, contrasted with bright colors, kind of like a comic strip.
M. Night Shimalyan is an Indian director who handles suspense beautifully, plus it is interesting to find out where exactly he makes his cameo appearances in his movies.
Ang Lee is pretty interesting because from directing the usual asian style martial arts movie he also directed Sense and Sensibility which is one of my all time favorite movies.
Try to view a series of movies by the same director and you will certainly develop a preference.

If I really enjoy a movie, and then I notice that the person has directed a lot of movies that I really enjoyed, then I proclaim that I really like that director, and I am willing to see more of their movies, even ones that I might have missed in the past. Recently after watching a Clint Eastwood-directed film on video, I noticed that I liked a lot of other Clint Eastwood films that I had seen. It seems that his films ALWAYS are well written, well acted, with interesting characters. I know it's an ensemble, but I just know that when I see a Clint Eastwood-directed film, I know that I am in for a truly interesting treat.

I like Tim Burton, because of the movies he's made. There's just a trend of good hits in his past. That's all I base it on

yeah, but a film is ultimately the director's decision, vision etc. they take someone's story and project how they envision it onto film. of course others give input but the director basically puts the movie together as he/she wants it.
