There is no such thing as a smoker or a non smoker for those who have smoked. Once you are a smoker, you will always be a smoker. The difference is not having a cigarette for a long period of time. I use to smoke 4 packs a day, but I haven't had a cigarette for over 20 years. Oh, I still want one, but I won't!!!! A person who never has smoked is a non smoker. Quitting was the most difficult thing I did in my life. I got up one morning, coughed my lungs up for five minutes, took my remaining cigarettes and threw them in the garbage. I was sick for 6 months after that with cold sweats, chills and extreme nervousness. I still would like a cigarette today, but I won't because I would be back to the 4 pack a day thing.

It is very hard to quit. I'm right now trying to quit and I use the patches. Smoking for me, was a behavioral thing as well as an addiction. I used to smoke after a meal, when I first got up in the morning, etc. Try using the patch as well as changing your behaviors. Also, smoking is a very oral thing. Get some livesavers candies or something else that can keep your mouth occupied. Good luck!!!

First of all, congratualtions on your decision. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health!!!

It will be a tough road at first, but be persistant. You've put a lot of nicotine into your system and it could take up to two weeks to work itself out. Once you are past it, the cravings will subside.

Another habit to break is the need to put your hands in your face all the time. it sounds stupid, but you may notice yourself doing it. Try finding something "hands-on" to do at the times you normally smoke.

The link below is the American Cancer Society's Quit Smoking page. It has a lot of helpful information, including what is happening to your body as different stages of smoking cessation. I hope you find everything you need to know there. Good luck, and again, congrats on the wise choice!!

I am a non smoker - finally! :-) I'll tell you, it was the toughest row I ever had to hoe! One doctor told me that the average individual will quit 7 or 8 times for a period of time before s/he quits for good. So, first pat yourself on the back for making the decision to pursue a healthier lifestyle. Second, view every effort as a good effort. (You quit for a week? Great! You quit smoking in the car? Bravo! etc.) Third, look for positive reinforcement from friends, health care professionals, organizations dedicated to helping people kick the habit. and Finally, NEVER GIVE UP! In the famous and much-repeated words of Adam Sandler, YOU CAN DO IT! :-)
Blessings on you!

The Patch and sucking cinnamon sticks(the real kind from the spice counter) worked for me. Stay busy- think of how good you smell and how you no longer stink up a room when you enter it. Put the money you spend on smokes in jar and buy yourself something with it. (Not smokes!) Basically you have to make up your mind.It is harder to quit cigs than cocaine, and I have quit both. (Not at the same time) Best of luck. Try try again!

When I was young I smoked and then I started to smell my fingers. The smell was most disturbing, when I would get the graving for a smoke I would smell my fingers and the smell of stale smoke made my stomach turn. I soon lost the desire to smoke. Smoke Free 30 + years. Dwell on the fact that smoking is a waste anyway you look at it. Good luck on QUITING! Michelle

You have to quit and suffer for a week. Then it'd be easier. However, after about a month, when you think that you've beaten the smoking and when you reach for a cigarette to prove it - then when it starts all over again.

Scare yourself into quitting. Read as much as you can about what smoking can do to your body. Remind yourself constantly. Your body is your temple! I'm sure your aware of the affects, but read more about them anyway. Read the obituaries. Imagine yourself on that page, with the cause of death being lung cancer.

try do do other things that will not remind you of smoking, it could be going to the movies with friends. If none of that works you should seek help from a doctor, and i'm sure they will help you.

Go into a small room with poor ventilation. Start chain smoking and don't stop until you are thoroughly sickened by the thought of "just one more" cigarette.
