I file a lot of paperwork for my company and they buy these tabs that have A-Z including a "Mc" tab. Is that really necessary in this day and age? Don't you think that's a bit outdated/even a bit too "arian" for our melting pot american culture? Can't we just file them between"mb and "md"s?

because there are A LOT of Mc's. there are places that dont have a folder for Mcs (like my school) and it can take up a lot of space. its just something that some people find easier. there are already a lot of "m" last names and this just makes it slightly easier to find them if accessibility is important.

for clarification:
MC or MAC means "son of". mc is simply the "short form" of mac.
so when you have a name like MacDonald or McDonald, it means "son of Donald". it is NOT two names put together.
with the vast majority of celts, particularly the scots, there are thousands of people with last names starting with mc/mac

Because, first off, there are vey few Mbs and Mds... second of all, Mc and Mac names have another capitol letter... for instance:
McCoy
its two names put together.

Mc ( aka Mac, which is a name) and
Coy (which is another name).
it has nothing to do with being arian.. they were just difficult to alphabetize, given the two names status.
would you file McDavies under Mc or MD?
thats the rub.

you would think so, but i think because of the number of names that start with Mc someone decided it deseved its own catagory.... i think it is Mc favoring, and should be eliminated.... it's not fair to all the other letters. lol
