Just wondering why some people pretend to be something/someone they're not ..even if it's obvious to other people that they're " playing games"?
I met someone like that today at work and now I'm curious to hear what other people think . Why do you think they do it?

Circle...good answer, thanks . I didn't know this person, but someone else knows him, the REAL him, quite well .The " pretender" didn't realise that anyone that knew him was infact there at the time , I found out the truth after he left.

Several reasons actually. Immaturity, needs attention, low self esteem. I could go on, but low self esteem can really make people act differently and fake because they try so hard to make friends that they will become whatever it takes to get the person to like them. It is very sad that people can not be who they are and can not be real but it does happen and it happens more times than not.

I think it is better to be you in the long run it will get further ahead in life instead of one Step forward and two steps back. My favorite expression to a situation like this is do not piss down my neck and tell me it is raining.
BE REAL BE YOU!

Hmm, quite a big question youre asking here...

The first reason why people pretend is usually to impress someone else. It could be a boss, a boy/girlfriend, or just a friend in general. If people think they don't come up to other's expectations, they will pretend that they are perfect to the other person. The reasons why they do that could be to get a job, a date, a payrise, whatever.

And also in today's internet age, we have more people pretending that they are who they want to be, for example, lonelygirl15 on YouTube, who has been exposed as a fake, and that the whole cherade was a acting project made by several people.

So don't be surprised if you meet a few more people who pretend. It is getting more widespread.

Some people are good judges of character and some are bad. To look at someone and say "they are pretending" is a judgement. You must therefore know what/who they are in order for you to be able to say "in good faith" that they are pretending.

Perhaps it is you who is making a bad judgement, and you really do not know this person at all?

To have just met someone at work, and to be able to make such an immediate judgement suggests either you are remarkably astute or remarkably ignorant. I cannot tell which it is as I do not know you.

I see it all the time and I'm afraid that I've done it myself in the past. The terrifying truth for posers is that we can all see through them so easily. Human beings are pretty good at sussing others out.
I suppose some put on a false image because they are obsessed with the image conscious celebrity culture and they want to be a star too (in their own little circle at work or outside).

Bottom line people are insecure. They're not happy with their own lives so they have to make their lives seem so much more interesting. I also think people do a lot of lying to themselves because they want to be someone else, so no matter how hard they try sadly it obvious it isn't them.

You must understand that a person's worst fear is loneliness. In order for acceptance in society, people strive to be accepted by pretending to be something they are not (called survival). Humans cannot stand isolation, that is why prisons have "holes", "boxes", "isolation chambers", whatever you want to call them. To isolate someone is like taking away their soul. Humans will do whatever necessary to be part of something, a group, a cause, a reason to live.

Don't really get you here... But I have to admit: some of the people live at the different world and they just can't change their image while pop up here. Some kind of day dreaming

I do it because i have a very sad life and so i try to make it more interesting by kidding people. i want my life to be as full and exiting as the person next to me and it never is so i am the great pretender, pretending that I'm doing well, my needs are such i pretend to much, I'm lonely and no one can tell.
