Okay, for those who haven't got a clue (the one saying it'll shoot right through you), a shell casing is the brass part that's ejected off to the side of a weapon when you fire it. It is NOT the pointy part that comes out the end of the barrel.

And yes, you can catch it. But it will be hot. There are a couple of ways you can go about it. If someone else is shooting, stand off to the side the shell will be traveling and grab it. I'd recommend wearing heavy leather gloves, because it will be hot. If you're a consistant shooter, you could try placing a bucket in the area where the majority of the spent shells land to catch most of them. Or go online to someplace like Galls or Cheaper than Dirt and order a brass catcher that attaches over the ejection port of the weapon.

I still have a burn mark from where a shell casing from an M-16 hit my arm. I also remember how it felt when it hit.

...but if you REALLY want to catch a shell casing, go right ahead.

It would be VERY VERY difficult, but if you can touch it, it'd got through you like a regular bullet, and HURT! It's mainly a movie effect, i doubt anyone has ever really done it.
