I need to transfer files from an old laptop (running 98) to a new laptop (running xp home). Can I just get a crossover cable, set up a simple network, and run the file transfer wizard?

(1) It is not necessary to have same OS.
(2) Beside LAN cable (crossover or straight[w/hub]) you can use LAPLINK Cables such as USB-USB or PARALLEL Cables (see link). Laplink parallel cable is cheap and no driver to install.

I usually stick the old harddrive in the new machine as a slave to allow for easier transfer of data and create a new folder and dump old program files to that so I can transfer data that I might have missed later. Then, you don't have to mess with setting up a network if it isn't already there.

No, they only need to be using the same network protocol, usually TCP/IP. A crossover cable is all you need.

it fairly works the similar for the era of OS platforms. you in easy words might want to wish to percentage the archives and folders you decide on with the community. you'd be in a position to also try setting up and FTP internet website on one among your pcs.
