I don't think you actually close back up, I think what can happen, at least what happened with me is, the practice I go to has about 8 different doctors and I was at 1 centimeter for like 8 weeks and every time I went in and a different doctr checked me they would say something different. Maybe because they have different size fingers or maybe if the baby is laying lower you can be swollen in there. I didn't start dialating more until I went into labor. Good Luck!

No, once your dialated that's it, it's BEGUN!!! You canstay dialated for awhile though. I was 4 centimeters for almost 2 weeks. When I went into labor though I was 4 centimeters until 30 mins before he was born.

Usually the only way you would go backwards would be if you were under extreme stress. ("fight or flight")
Keep in mind that if different people do your cervical checks, they may assess you differently.
AND keep in mind that cervical checks really mean NOTHING. You can walk around for a week or more dilated 3-4 cm and 100% effaced (I did!) or you can be closed up tight as a bank vault and give birth that same day.

Yes, and it also depends on whose doing the checking I found out. You can be a 1-2, or even a 3 though for quite sometime before labor actually begins. (Weeks!)

In my experience, once you're dilated, there's no going back! However, it can take several days or even a couple weeks before you're dilated enough to deliver. No one can say with absolute certainty when it will happen.
