It is an extension of the freedom of speech. A newspaper cannot be punished for publishing information that is true. Of course, this is not a license for the press to say whatever they want, they can still be sued for publishing false information, especifically if it impacts an individual or an organization in a negative way.

Without a free press you would have probably never heard of Watergate, or Iran Contra, or the secret CIA prisons, etc.

This is all of course theory. The people that control these newspapers and news channels can influence the information released by these organizations.

A free press is guaranteed by the constitution and is the backbone of a free society. In the United States, our press enjoys the freedom to hide the identity of individuals to the point of affecting our national security. They enjoy the freedom to suppress stories that don't meet their agenda. They have the freedom to expose the most trivial individual mistakes of our President to make our whole country look like idiots to the rest of the world.

ISN'T FREEDOM GRAND?

It is merely so to keep the public threatened at all times. Remember when we're talking about 'free' press, it means the reporters are at complete 'free' will to publish whatever suits their taste, in whatever manner they decide.
Ofcourse there is another side to it as well. If you have a bureaucratic and people-intolerant government or authoritative ruling body, there are a number of needs that can be met.
