Usually, you first have to get yourself in decent general running shape. You know, being able to go out for 45 minutes and feel comfortable. So first get there.
Then, most training programs are either 3 or 4 month programs. A lot of times the first month of the 4 month is pretty tame, but it varies.
A common theme for training programs is to do one long run a week (usually the weekend, whichever day your marathon is on). During the week, there is a lot of normal running. Usually a day is set aside for hills or speed workouts or something similar. I've also seen them recommend doing one race a month, moving up from 5k to a 10k to a half then your full marathon.
I'd recommend finding a training guide that makes sense to you and would fit your schedule. Then stick to it. That is the hardest part.
Good luck

at least 6 months . . a year is better
start by running for time . . don't worry about distance . .
run every day or take one day off a week. have an easy day, a medium day, and one day that you push it a little longer.
easy day to start might be 15 minutes, average day 20 minutes, longer day 25 or 30 minutes.
gradually extend the time you run until your easy day is an hour, medium is 1.5 hours, and long is 2 or 2.5 hours.
after a few months of that, you'll be ready to finish a marathon.

Run everyday, do leg exercises to strengthen your legs, gradually build up to long distances. Mentally prepare yourself.
