If I could only introduce your son to my old boss, Budd. He's had like 4 trachiatomies(spelling), been smoking for years, has no voice whatsoever. and has only one eye, but thats from something else. Anyways, why don't you show him some pictures of lung cancer, and heart disease and gum cancer, etc. you can google.com/images and type it in through there. don't discipline him, help him.

Just talk to him about it and tell him you're concerned.See if he's addicted or just experimenting with it. Remember that pretty much every teen tries smoking at some point.
Don't make a real big deal out of it. That will only make him smoke more.
Whether he's addicted or not, don't expect him to automatically quit. It has to be his own decision.
Don't force it. That will make him smoke alot more.

wow. first of all, remember he's addicted. he may or may not want to stop, but its going to be HARD. Im a ur sons age, so don't listen to adults who say, JUST BE FIRM. thats the wrong way to do it. what you do now can alienate your son, or provide him with support and care. What you say doesn't matter so much as the messge you send... the most important thing in th eworld right now is that your son knows that you are there for him, to help him and support him as he tries to quit.

If he doesn't want to quit... i would seriously talk with an expert in the field. There are a whole load of panphlits and stuff.

remember... lose his trust now, and you lose all chance of influencing him. Keep his trust, and he'll turn to you when he needs help, and you can do so.

I would consider doing what people above are suggesting... seeing the frail, sad victims of lung cancer in a hospital can have a powerful affect on a young mind.

"Son, smoking is a health hazard"

All kids try it and think they're cool, but if you use something like "no girl is ever going to want to kiss you because it's like kissing cigarette ashes in an ashtray". What worked for my husband, his dad made him smoke so many in front of him until he threw up. I quit because my doctor told me that if I didn't quit, I was going to get Emphysema? at a very young age. Enough for me. Good luck.

Sit down with him. Show him the health hazards...find documentation like websites, books, magazines, etc... Just show him the facts. Tell him it hurts you a lot to see him do this to himself.

One thing do not do....DO NOT LECTURE OR YELL AT HIM. If you do he will keep doing it. If he doesnt stop leave those articles laying around the house. One day he will figure it out!

first of all he is 16, he know the rules and hazzards of somking. You need to discipline him and tell him that somking is not right for u to be doing at this age, and once he is out of your house thats wen he can do all the smoking. But you have to set rules, hes your son you have to make sure he is safe. Punish him because he kno smoking is not good.

Tell him to read the warning on the outside of the package. Then tell him that only ignorant, uneducated and stupid people smoke. The days of smoking being 'cool' are long gone.

If he's 16, he *knows* that smoking is a health hazard.

Ground him.

Take him to the respiratory ward at your local hospital. Have him meet some people who have had to have a lung removed or have to talk through one of those machines.
