Some explanations for social and economic inequality that we hear don't make sense! (They are too simplistic) The fact that you don't accept these at face value is good, and shows that you're a person who wants to think for himself and figure things out. You're not asking for a perfect understanding, and it IS DUH when people say over and over "you're not black, you can never understand"
I think you need to preface some of your questions with some kind of a disclaimer, so you get past this simple answer. "I know I can't completely understand prejudice or whatever because I'm not black..." Then ask a more specific question about an incident or experience the person has had -- like "Can you tell me an incident where you've exerienced discrimination or unfair treatment lately?" Try something like this, and you WILL get some good stories about prejudice and a few that you KNOW are not.
You don't have to go back 400 years to see examples of racism and how it works. I recommend Chapter 1 of the Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison on amazon.com. Things are better now for sure, but this book shows a black man's experience back when racism was obvious and during relatively modern times. Now racism and racist barriers are subtle, but seeing these obvious examples can help a person see the current, covert racism. Also below are Wikipedia entries for "Black Like Me" a book by a white man who dyed his skin and posed as black in the 1950's South, and Spark notes for that book,

Its not saying anything negative about you but in a way you will never know. Being black is something people live with for their entire lives. Its hard to explain it but unless you experience somethings you will never know what it feels like or what people have to go thru. Its like a man trying to experience child birth.....

Because if u arent Black you won't relate. You can understand, but you don' experience the things that they have. I'm white but my daughger is half black. Life is hard deal with it. If you know how many black people have been in ur house ur probably a racist.

Maybe there's something in your demeanor that rubs people the wrong way. Or maybe you ask questions that show that you stereotype or dislike blacks.

well may be they think that if they tell you, you wont understand because you dont know what is like to be that race. It's kind of like you asking how do they feel if people are racist to them. they can tell you but you wont fully understand becuz you dont know what is like to be treated like that.
