We all part of a game like The Sims and that's why terrible things happen. Sometimes the owner of the game (perhaps God) kills people or lets terrible things happen like when we play a game and kill everone in sight.

What most people seem to be ignoring is that all Descartes' claim of, "I think therefore I am," demonstrates is that thinking and acting proves that there is something there to think and act. It says nothing about the nature of the reality in which the thinkers and actors find themselves. And the solution proposed above is a perfectly valid solution for that particular question.

After all, what if it could be demonstrated that Sims think? They do perform actions without you telling them, and in many ways they seem to behave as independant entities. Nobody ever said, "You think therefore you are," for the simple reason that it is pretty much impossible to demonstrate that anyone else really can and does think. They certainly seem to, though.

So what's wrong with calling the Sims' reality REAL? Yes, it's a more limited reality than the one you or I seem to be in, and yes it's been manfuactured, but do any of these things necessitate that is has no meaning of any kind? After all, many would say that the reality we share is but a small fragment of the one that God dwells in, and that God manufacured our universe!

Though I'll defend the reality of the Sims, I think I'll have to stop short of advocating this particular solution as the best explanation for our reality as well. While I grant that it COULD be so, there seems to be no reason to believe it MUST be so, and since there are simpler solutions around with better explanatory power, I think I'll stick with those for the time being. I also tend to think that believing in the significance of our reality lends support to efforts to improve our reality, and even if ultimately we are just in a larger game, I'd want it to be the best of possible games!

You can play that mind game until the cows come home, but, in the end, there is only one philosophy that works: I think, therefore I am. If you believe the world is real, then it is. If you believe you are real, then you are.

The fact that you can ask this question means you are real, at least you think you are
