Well, Victor, some people don't use credit cards, that's why they're debt free.
I can't believe Wal-Mart would do that. That will definately hurt business.
Explanation of Lay-A-Way: You decide you want a TV that costs $400. You have the store hold it for 6 weeks for you. You put down a 10% deposit (that would be $40) then you make payments each week until it's paid in full. That way they hold the TV that you want and no one else can get it. It's saved. When it's paid, you get the TV. No Interest but a tiny service charge like 2 or 3 bucks.

Because the items that they sell are about as cheap as can get next to the Family Dollars stores! I use to shop at Wal-Mart a lot when I was living in Texas! Now I'm in New Jersey and there are very few. If they're here, they're way out in west hell! I can't even find one. It's too much competition up here in the North for Wal-Mart to even try breaking ground! But to get back to your question, Wal-Mart has some good deals and they really didn't need the layaway system in their stores from the beginning. There is one exception because I worked in 3 different department for Wal-Mart. The Electronics Department, no way! Their TVs are high! The stereos and radios, Cd's and movies are reasonable but the money it would take to purchase one of their TVs you could go to a warehouse and possibly do better on pricing.

I have never had a pleasant visit to the layaway department at Wal-Mart. There was never anyone there to wait on customers and there were usually 5 or 6 customers waiting in line. The only reason I ever used it to begin with is if I thought that there was a limited supply of an item that I wanted to buy. Since then, I found out that they never run out of anything... ever.

I don't shop at Wal-Mart & I didn't know people still used lay-away.
I guess it was good for people that needed to pay a little at a time and not use credit.

they should keep it. this way people buy their products, even if they don't have the money at the moment (wal-mart's intent to take money you don't have lol). space is saved on the shelves for newer products so they make even more money. all-in-all its a good service that they shouldn't get rid of.

K-mart near my house tried that once, they lost so much business that they brought it back within two months.

Don't know.
I've always wondered what the heck "lay-away" was anyway. Anyone care to explain?

I didn't even know they had one. Ending it makes it harder for some folks to purchase expensive items.
