maybe you should just stick with a haunted hayride into the woods but have it so you can stop at "sights" where things "happened." Have a story to go with it, so while the people are looking at the sight the people that jump out can get into a good position.
Lots of strobe lights, good haunted music, see if you can make your own, and masks that have a persons face but flip it, it is freaky when a "human" face mask is flipped inside out.
