I travel around in central Brum quite often and haven't been approached by a beggar in years - not since they demolished that awful underpass-walkway down below the Rotunda. Also, I rarely see down-and-out/drunks on the streets; perhaps its because I go mostly during the day. I am going to the Bull Ring and StMartins area this evening so I'll add to this posting and let you know what happens.
Sunday morning. Went into Brum last night. Three or four winos/rough sleepers on Masshouse carpark. One asked for cash.
I don't give cash as it only encourages the rough living and alcoholism. Better to support a charity like Shelter or Birmingham City Mission.

I lived in Dublin Ireland and it was horrible. Alot of the problem was due to drug abuse. Or alcohol. Plus the kids of adults with addictions were out begging as well. Could be the same in Birmingham.
What I thought was pretty cheeky was they would beg right next to an ATM. Try telling someone you don't have any money when your getting it out of the wall.

I never noticed anything like that when I was there in Nov 2001 on holiday. I was around the Corporation St. area , Aston Uni, the canal. I do not remember noticing one begger. Its very developed there in town - the bullring - museum , st chads , art gallery, all the bars and pubs - coffee houses- I was quite impressed.

Yeah nice one mate. You're doing a really good job of combatting the stupid stereotypes that people have about Birmingham. Maybe you should move to a better part of town. Idiot.
