Frogs would do good, but I'm not quite sure. Maybe you could manage to have a few mice? Some kind of insect, like a tarantula or scorpion. Crabs sounds good, you could fit hermit crabs in there I bet. I also figure you could manage to squeeze in a bunch of snails. I know they're not really interesting, but I have limited space here. You should probably buy a tank slightly on the larger scale, you can get them cheap, and you might be able to fit a snake, or two small painted turtles. On how to make your own, homemade terrarium out of a fish bowl!!!!!! (Plus, another good idea for a pet would be some see monkeys!)

Hermit crabs, sure...
There are also those Red-Eared Slider Turtles. They grow 6-12 inches long. That might be a little too big though, but they're pretty.
You know, fish aren't that bad really. I used to think they were boring, but we recently just bought a small fish bowl and then a beta fish, and I've grown pretty attached to the little guy. My mom didn't really like fish before, either, but now she suddenly wants to buy a big aquarium with bright, colorful fish and other small sea creatures.

Hemit crabs would be my suggestion.. http://www.hermit-crabs.com/
I would not suggest a turtle because the standard ( though not hard fast rule) is 1 inch of turtle per 10 gallons in a tank. They need more room than a small tank.
Also, small mammals (hamsters/gerbils etc.. )should not be kept in a tank because of heat issues, it can often heat up in the bottom and cause harm to the animal.

It depends on how high maintenance you want the pet to be. Fish are very low maintenance. Turtles are higher maintenance. Frogs, forget about. They'll croak all night and keep you up. I am a big fan of Bearded Dragons. Funny to watch them eat crickets. Of course you have to decide how you feel about keeping live crickets. If you want super low maintenance non-fish, go with hermit crabs.

Hermit crabs are fun, you'll need a glass lid(to keep the humidity in), sand, 2 water dishes(1 aquaruim salt, 1 fresh both need to be declorinated), 1 food dish, extra shells and atleast 2 crabs, since they are social. Plus they'll eat just about anything! Mine love chicken bones, popcorn, dandilions, eggs(with shells). You can learn all about proper care at www.epicureanhermit.com

Yes, turtles, small reptiles. Go to a local pet store and see what pleases you. Talk to the store clerks, find out how the creature lives, make sure it will be happy in your tank.
