I have the b&w episodes on DvD (til Don Knotts went off the show) and it really wasn't mentioned a whole lot in depth but I wanna say that she died after giving birth to Opie.

they never said. By the way i agree with the person about the pickle episode. Andy and Barney and opie had to have had really bad stomachs after that one!!

I don't think that the show ever addressed that issue. My personal theory is that she had a lesbian love affair with Floyd the barber's sister and ran off to LA to start a combination art gallery and comfortable shoe store.

That's a good question! I don't think they ever really addressed that. That would be really interesting to find out.
