Sometimes, when it is cold, it can take more than a minute to engage in reverse. I haven't noticed any change in forward shifitng. It is full of fluid, and has been changed on schedule.

Sounds like a bad seal. When you put it in reverse a piston moves to change the gears. If the seal is old and worn fluid can get past it. Since it happens only sometimes and in the cold I would guess the seal is starting to fail and when it heats up it expands to its correct size.

It may be a check valve letting the fluid drain out of the torque converter. If you are always starting out in reverse you may not know it also wont go forward until the converter fills back up. other than that I would agree with the others that you have a bad seal in the transmission. If it is a seal you can try a transmission stop leak it causes the seals to swell and may fix it for a year or two.

It`s hard to say not knowing the mileage or make n` model, but it is possible that the rev. valve in the valve body is sticking. Or the seals are hardening causing a leak in the rev. clutch-pack, which goes away as the trans. warms up and the seals soften. Since you change your fluid regularly, (once a year I hope) I would suggest a fluid change to synthetic or at the very least, regular fluid with a seal conditioning additive. Good luck. Rolf

Get some additive that will get rid of the varnish that is preventing your transmisison from working right. I am not sure what you drive, but International Lubricants makes the best products in this category (www.lubegard.com)
