The pelvic exam is the exam of your internal organs. The doctor palpates your abdomen, with and without two fingers in your vagina, to feel the size, location, etc... of your reproductive organs. The Pap smear is when they open your vagina with a speculum and take a sample of cells from your cervix to test for dysplasia, which can be a precursor to cervical cancer. Along with a manual breast exam, the Pap and pelvic make up a typical gynecological exam.

No but they're both usually done at the same visit. A pap smear is just that....a smear of the tissue the dr extracts from the vagina. A pelvic exam is to determine if there are any growths, checks for enlargements of the uterus, cervix. Get a great dr and it will be fine. Good Luck!

A pap smear is done during a pelvic exam. But an exam can be done to see about other things too.

a pap smear exam is done while you're getting a pelvic exam. A pap exam is just one of the tests done!

Not quite. For a pelvic exam, the doc will lube her fingers and press on either side of your pelvis with one hand inside your vagina and one hand ouside on your pelvis. I think it's more comfortble than a pap.

no, pelvic is literally looking to make sure if everything is okay. pap is a sample of tissue they send to a lab to test.
