The government has plenty of money to go around, including for the NHS. Down the street from me is the US Geological Survey, a minor freckle on the underbelly of the government. Yet it has a massive building and 1,000 cars that fill the parking lot every day. That's our money and I don't see many empty parking spaces.

The obvious counterargument to that is that if the government didn't allot funds for the military, then we could simply be invaded by a rival nation who would be extremely unlikely to treat the conquered citizens well. The military is necessary for the other functions of government (like social services) to exist.

That's not to say that it might be a good idea to allot more money towards social services and less towards the military (that's very debatable) but to say that we should fully fund the NHS before the military is foolish.

And if you feel so strongly about it, there's plenty of ways for you to make an impact. Volunteer somewhere, or donate money or goods to a worthwhile charity. Even if you don't want to donate money yourself, you can tell friends or family members to donate money in your name to a charity for Christmas or your birthday rather than give you a gift you don't really want (Heifer International as well as other organizations has an online gift catalog that makes this easy)
