Somewhere on your dashboard is a sensor that measures daylight. If it is covered or very dirty cleaning or uncovering it is a 1st step.
The 2nd is to check for stuck switch buttons found somewhere along the edge of the door. It may be covered in rubber jacket looking like an accordians folds.
Beyond that a technician with a computer diagnostic program likely needs to plug into your vehicle to check for error codes. Good Luck!

It sounds like the switch in the door jam that turns those lights on when the door opens is faulty. The spring in the switch may have gotten soft over time and the contacts are barely touching. Fix this by getting a replacement switch at the auto parts store and buy some guy some beer to put it in for you.

it sounds like a bad door switch you didn't mention what kind of car it is. Most older American cars have a switch near the door jam between the hinges. some of the foreign cars have a sliding switch near the latch and some newer cars have the switch built into the latch inside the door. 1988 - 2000 Chevy and GMC full sized trucks have on the side of the dash where the door hits it.
