I am a diabetic, type II. My doctor told me that he wants my fasting blood sugars to be between 70-110, regular blood sugars to be 80-120...and no higher than 200 an hour after a meal. The internet is a great place to research diabetes and it's care....just go to ask.com or google or any good search engine and you can find everything you need to know about it. Also your father's physician should be talking to him about it. If he can't take the time to talk to your father, I would look for another doctor. Good Luck!!!

With a diagnosis like diabetes, your father should be getting information from the doctor/nurse practitioner or whomever does the educating. He should also be talking to a nutritionist who can tell him what to eat, what not to eat, how much, when, etc. And other info like:
1) when to check blood sugar
2) what's an OK range for him
3) what to do if blood sugar is not in the OK range
Diabetes is all about education, and it should come from the medical professionals who are working with him, because they know him the best.
For other info, here is the info page of the American Diabetes Association:
http://www.diabetes.org/about-diabetes.jsp
This site also has a forum (aka "message boards"). It might be a good place for support from other people who are going through the same thing.
A diagnosis like this is overwhelming at first - for the patient, the family, friends - everyone who cares about him. Take it one step at a time. Learn something, ask a question, learn something else. If you don't understand what they tell you (this advice is for him as well as you), ask them to repeat it in different words, and then you repeat it back to them so they can be sure you got it. Give yourself time to absorb it all. It will eventually all sink in.
Good luck.

How long ago did HE find out? What was the very last thing he had to eat before he found out? How much time elasped after he ate and before he was told he has diabetes? Did he get a second opinion? These are VERY IMPORTANT questions I must ask As he might have been given a false positive. That is exactly what happened to me. I say this as one time during a blood after some blood was withdrawn from me. The nurses thought I had diabetes. what they weren't aware of is the fact that I had just eaten something then. The blood sugar tends to rise as food is being digested. Later on, it was determined that I WAS NOT diabetic. And I'm STILL NOT to this day. Knowledge is power.

Hiya, the only way you can help is to find out what type he is,as there are two types 1 and 2,I'm type 2 which means that i just take tablets and have to eat low sugar and low fat foods, which is very hard to do,can you not go with him to the Dr and ask how you can help,I'm sure he would be more than happy for some help, especially where getting the right foods for him,i hope this has helped you,and good luck

too high is any BSL (blood sugar level) higher than 7 (mmols - thats per unit of blood), too low, lower than 4 mmols. Get him a blood sugar monitoring kit so he can test his sugars to stay within the right limits. Its very important that he does this..

Since he is just diagnosed his doc will do a full battery of tests. The results will then be disscussed by him and his doctor. they will form an action plan and work on how to control him. Give it time, he will get all the information

He really needs to talk to his doctor about this. You don't say if he will be on insulin or pills?
