It's a tradition that goes back to medieval days. The king got to bang the wife before the husband did (see the movie "Braveheart"), so to make her look ugly and hope that the king wouldn't want to bang her first, the groom would shove mud in her face. To make it fair, he allowed her to shove mud in his face. The tradition carried on to today where we use the cake to symbolize that they belong to each other only.

It depends on the bride and groom. If they are a couple that likes to tease each other, than it's okay. When the guy does it just because he thinks it will make him look cool in front of his friends then he deserves to have the whole cake smashed on him.

If my boyfriend and I ever get married, we'll be the couple that smooshes a little bit of cake on each other, but just on the mouth.

It's STUPID and a SIN when people play with food! Food is meant for human consumption not to PLAY with. It is selfish and hearless....

People who play with food should think of all the starving people around the world including right home here in good old USA!!!! These people who have 'food-fights' and TV shows that glorify such senseless sport should be stricken with an illness that prevents them from eating and let them suffer from starvation. maybe then they would wake up realize that it is a sin to play with food!!!

Not particularly - especially if both of them want to do it. If both the bride and groom are having fun and want to do it, why should it bother you? They're not shoving it in your face.

I think it's pretty disrespectful. I'd love to know how it became a tradition. I'm glad to see that a lot of young couples today don't do it. I think I'll do some research and try to find out the origin of this tradition. I'm curious about it.

when the groom does it yes, but the bride? nah, the guys are pigs anyways so the piece of cake usually fits.

Yes I do. The tradition of feeding each other cake symbolizes taking care and nurturing each other. It bugs me to death when people turn it into a food fight.

I hate it too! Totally lame. It's about as tasteful as the best man getting hammered and talking about the brides cleveage.

A gentle shove is okay; I don't like it when the smear it all over each others faces.

Totally, I think it is so tacky.
Especially when you consider a lot of brides spend a ton on special wedding makeup.
