In New York, actions of this type are generally filed in State Supreme Court in the county in which either you live or in which the other party lives. Contacting an attorney who practices in the area may save you a great deal of time, if not money.

Beware of the short NY statute of limitations on defamation: if your action is not brought within one year of the time of the alleged defamation, your case will be dismissed.

I assume you dont want to go to an attorney.

Its a little dificult to do yourself, and hard to prove damages. Depending on tha amount you are suing for you file the complaint in the Supreme Court or a lower court. There are fees and reqiuirements. Quite truythly, it may not be worth it.
