It depends on where you are going in Michigan. The fall colors are already prominent in the UP. Here is a link to a Fall Colors Map and Tour page. This should help you decide!

Fall Colors are starting near Lake Superior now....20% according to the following Wisconsin tourism site:

Check it out for a thorough idea of peak dates.
Michigan has relatively the same dates as Wisc., according to latitudes. I am guessing that Illinois will start in 3 weeks to the north and another 3 weeks south of Springfield. It takes about another week or 2 to reach the peak after the leaves start to "turn."

Mid October. Later in October all the leaves have changed color, but we usually get winds and rain in Chicago that make them fall off. So you'll see them, but mostly on the ground as you move into November. Still, these three states fall colors are breathtaking- esp. parts of Michigan...

In Wisconsin the best time is about the 3rd week in October. That is when the colors are the brightest. It's absolutely beautiful, but if you come too early you won't see the best, and if you come too late you'll only see empty tree branches :(

The first 3 weeks of October is usually good. It's gorgeous. Right about Nov 1 the scenery is gone. Have fun. There are some beautiful areas. Peace.

Well, I live in Michigan and our trees haven't started to change yet...most all are still green. I'm sure between now and through October they will change alot. October is your best month to see changing of the colors in Michigan. They are truly beautiful.

From late September (parts of northern Michigan) to late October (southern Illinois), depending on where you go.

Sorry, yet there is amazingly little interior the section. There are some residential streets that are colourful for some blocks and short stretches of u . s . a . roads, yet not something that comes on the threshold of what i've got considered interior the east.
