Given a valid reason, maternity leave with complications, documented fatigue, etc., you should be able to request a leave of absence and most large reputable employers should grant it.
I took a leave to finish an advanced degree and had been granted
the time off without pay but with accruing time towards retirement from a state university. Caution, you should be sure that both you and the employer put everthing in writing citing
company policy where possible and both parties should sign the
the agreement.

That depends on what you are making now and how valuable you are to the company. If they see you need the break and if they do not want to lose you, they may settle for this arrangement.

Assuming you are making say, $200K, 25% of that is not bad at all.

Or, you can call it sabbatical. Tell them you are going to Thailand (pick a country, any country that is believable for your line of work) and you are collaborating with top research organizations to come up with innovative way of doing something you now are doing. You really have to think this thru. Then make this palatable.

Think like your employer - why would they agree to this proposal? Then, make a go for it. You are making it appear that it is good for the company and for improving the present method of doing business. It depends entirely on you as to how convincing you can make it appear.

Put it this way - someone will not give you something for nothing. There is no such thing as free lunch.

This is a rhetorical question, right? You save up enough to live on for 8 months. Six months off work and two months to find another job.

Not enough information to say....

What size is the company you work for? Why do you want to take this time off? If it's for disability, childbirth, etc. then FMLA may be able to help you. You employer may also have a benefit to help with this, if you have a good reason for needing the time off. It has nothing to do with your salary.
