If you have a shortwave radio, tune it to WWV (2.5, 5, 10, 15 or 20 MHz), CHU (3330 or 7335 kHz) or the nearest time signal station to you, and make a note of the time, which is usually given in UTC terms. From that, subtract eight hours for Pacific time, seven hours for Mountain time, six for Central time or five for Eastern, and make an adjustment depending on whether or not daylight savings time is observed in the area of the States you're looking for.
