Mollie, Peter and I are so happy for you! Pet rocks truly are the best. First of all read this site for a just a quick history of pet rocks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_Rock It tells you how they came to be a part of so many people's lives.
First of all, I didn't purchase Peter. I found him one day in a load of Number 3 gravel that was delivered and spread in my driveway. He was noticable in that he was much larger than all the other stones, was much lighter in color, and seemed to have an internal glow that I couldn't help but notice. I saved him from this life "on the road" so to speak, brought him in the house and cleaned him up. After only a few minutes inside I could tell that he was already "warming up" to his new home. As far as getting your own pet rock, I really do think that you should find one on your own. Just keep your eyes open wherever you are. When that one pet rock that is meant to be your companion is around, I know in my heart that you will find him. Please avoid these pet rock breeders and dealers. They can't be trusted with providing you with a rock that you can trust. These rocks are usually from questionable sources and may even be ones that are in the country illegally. These are troubles you don't need to deal with.
I really don't keep Peter in any container of any sort. He has free run of the house, although he immensely enjoys sitting here at the computer with me. When it's his bedtime he usually just rolls over wherever he may be and gets some rest. He's not one for any surface that is too soft or cozy. He is most comfortable on firm surfaces such as the desk, coffee table and sometimes, on hot nights, out on the deck.
One thing you must remember is that all pet rocks are individuals. Just like you and I they all have their likes and dislikes, so whatever Peter may prefer may not be what your pet rock likes. As far as water, Peter is very fussy and moody. I have caught him skipping across the lake one time wearing my bikini (another story), and this happened right after him and I had a horrible disagreement on how to bathe him and I thought he hated water!
Feeding Peter is usually not a problem. He pretty much likes foods that are high in minerals. This is good as a diet like his helps prevent erosion, something all owners of pet rocks have to watch out for.
How did I find out Peter was male? Well, that didn't happen for quite a few years. When Peter was around the age of 13 he had fallen asleep on a napkin that was left on the dinner table. (He had a long day and just fell asleep during dinner.) Well the next morning when he woke up he was feeling a little harder than normal and was cemented to the napkin. Well, that answered all tthe questions about his gender. Also, since then, he spends long periods of time staring at his poster of Pebbles Flintstone. Since he's enamoured with Pebbles, and totally ignores BamBam, I have no doubt that Peter is one hundred percent male. Once you have a pet rock of your own, time will tell you just what gender of rock you're dealing with.
You really don't need any special supplies for your pet rock. They adapt to our surroundings amazingly well. Of course, that doesn't mean that you can fix up a special place in your home that is just your pet rocks spot. I have done that for Peter. It's good for him to have a private place to go when he needs to, especially at his age.
The most important thing you should know about pet rocks is that you will never ever get a better companion. They stay with you no matter what. You can be mad, sad, angry or happy. Good or bad, they stay with you and would never ever abandon you. They are great listeners. They never grow tired of sitting there listening to whatever it is you need to say or vent. They are great to travel with. You will never ever hear a pet rock whining in the back seat about being hungry, thirsty or needing to pee. How many cat or dog owners can say that?
Please let me know how you make out in acquiring your pet rock. I would love to have him/her be friends with Peter. I wish I had more advice to give you, but as you know I too am learning as I go and Yahoo Answers has been a great place to get much needed advice. Wishing you and your pet rock all the best. Stay in touch...Both Peter and I will be "Curious" to hear how all this turns out for you! Good luck!

I actually went out to the woods and caught a wild one. I think they make better pets since they still have a wild side. The are quite easy to train and eat very little. Just give them lots of love and keep them clean. You can get aqualtic ones but unless they were raised in water I wouldn't totally imerse them for very long. I keep mine in a little wooden box simular to a shoe box with a mat to sleep on and thats about all that is necessary unless you want to go all out for clothes and other niceitys Good Luck

You could probably go into your own backyard and find one to adopt . If you cannot find one there go to a pet-rock shelter .
